Is it true that your employer is supposed to provide you with your w2s before jan 31st?

The company I work for has not provided me, or anyone who I work with, with our w2s yet. They inform us that supposedly our w2s got ';lost in the mail'; and they have to re-mail them. Is this some form of law violation because our personal information is ';lost'; but the company just uses that as an excuse to cover their own ***....Is it true that your employer is supposed to provide you with your w2s before jan 31st?
Your employer is doing something wrong and using this lame excuse.

In 20 years of accounting, I have always been able to give our employees a copy of their W2. If they were prepared and mailed, then they have a copy for their records.

We always had 3 copies: 1 for the employee, 1 for our records and 1 was sent to the IRS. They should be able to give you a copy right now. Something is very fishy. I have a feeling that they didn't prepare them, or they ran them and there were errors that needed to be corrected, or some other problem. I think they are lying to you.Is it true that your employer is supposed to provide you with your w2s before jan 31st?
More than likely your w2 was burned, and said to have been lost in a ditch.
they are required to have the W-2 in the mailed by 1/31....
Yes, employers are required to provide you with your w2 on or before January 31st.

Once you have reported this to your employer and you still have not received it by February 14th, contact the IRS.

You will be asked to provide them with your information and employer information, (name, address, etc,) they will then contact your employer for you.

If your still having a problem and getting down to the wire for filing, you can file, ';form 4852,'; the IRS can provide more information on that when and if, you have to contact them.
yep
Well they can't provide you with your w2s before Jan 31st since they are for that year's taxing. So they can't provide them before the year is over can they?

But your company couldn't have lost all your w2s... that is a bit weird, and I would look into that. Good luck!
