Is it true that water is bad for nails?

I mean if you have long nails and you put them in contact with water for long time, like when you go swimming, wash dishes, take long bathes, etc.

I notice that when I do any of those my nails get softer and become a bit more transparent. Is it true that water is bad for nails?
Yes, it is true. In fact, water is one of the most damaging chemicals your nails can come into contact with. It tends to strip away the natural oils which help to keep your nails strong and healthy. What happens in the case of extended exposure to water, your nails will swell up due to water being absorbed into them. When your nails begin to dry after being removed from water, they will shrink back to their original size. Over time, this creates a great deal of stress on the nail plate, and your natural oils are slowly stripped away with each repeated exposure to water. In turn, your nails will likely become dry and brittle. To help prevent this from happening, use simple steps such as using cotton lined rubber gloves when doing dishes or using liquid household cleaning chemicals. Also, after your nails have been exposed to water, such as after you wash your hands, use a moisturizing hand lotion. This will benefit both your skin, and your nails. Moisture is stripped from your nails from nail polish remover as well. Acetone can have a drying effect on your skin and nails. Minimize the drying effects of nail polish remover by limiting its use to once a week or less. Use of cuticle oil is also recommended to keep your nails moisturized, which in turn helps prevent them from becoming dry and brittle. Apply a couple drops of cuticle oil and massage into your cuticles, and your nails too. Apply 2-3 times a day - every day. If you don't have cuticle oil, you can use things like olive oil, or vitamin E. Even plain vegetable oil works wonders on your nails. The object is to keep the natural oils that are found within the nail structure where they belong - In the nail. It's when the oils are removed that problems begin to crop up.

I hope this helps! Is it true that water is bad for nails?
