I'm from ontario and I'v heard that canadians have an accent in comparison to americans (I know that everyone technically has an accident). Anyways I went into a store in Georgia once and the woman asked if I was from canada, and I am, and she said she could hear my strong canadian accent. I just found it odd because I thought I sounded just the same as she did. I just find it strange that americans can hear canadian accents but canadians can't hear american ones (besides the obvious southern and new york accents) Could this be because most canadians watch american TV and become accustomed to the american accent?
Anyways...I also know that people think canadian accents sound stupid. Do they really? And do all canadians talk like that or just some?Is it true that canadians have an accent?
No one can hear their own accent. Canadians say ';out'; funny. Big ';O'; sound. Watch hockey in Pittsburgh and our color guy is Canadian. Alex Trebeck on Jeopardy! is Canadian too. That's why he talks like that.
In Pittsburgh, we say ';filled'; instead of ';field';.Is it true that canadians have an accent?
i have a friend that says aboot for about,,,,i could go on. but they dont sound stupid,,,just canadian
Most folks I know in the UK prefer Canadian accents to most US ones.
Perceived as being softer, less harsh or loud and with subltle hints of Scottish and Irish.
eh?
It is the little phrases that display origins.
Throw a shrimp on the barby, you think Australia
Git yerself up and fetch me that there shotgun. you think of some some southern redneck.
Pahk the cah ovah by the cop shop. Boston
Pardon me, might I trouble you for the time? UK
The auto is acting funny , eh? CAN
It is not so much accent as it is usage of terms mixed with colloquilasims.
Yeah, it's true that there are canadian accents to americans. One of the most popular jokes about their accents are how canadians use eh? in the end of each sentence.
I'm Australian and have met a few Canadians....at first I always assume they are American because personally I cannot differentiate. Although the Canadians I have met have been slightly softer spoken without such a drawn out loud accent...I don't know if this was only just significant to them...... but therefor I have assumed Canadians don't have as much of a drawn out twang or pronounce everything with as much of an RRRRR sound as I find the Americans do.
Neither Canadian or American accents sound dumb...they are unique though defiantly compared all the other accents through out the world.
Yes, Canadians have accents. The Ontario accent is similar to the Minnesota accent.
Canadians pronounce their vowels differently than most Americans. The one example that most Americans hear the easiest is that Canadians pronounce their OU sounds more like OO (although not exactly the same).
Americans can sometimes tell Canadians due to the words that they use. Americans go on vacation. Canadians go on holiday. Americans ask where the rest room is. Canadians ask where the washroom is. And then there's that uniquely Canadian of words, eh.
I'm from England and i honestly can't tell the difference.
But maybe it's because she's been surrounded by american accents all her life - and it's different. So she knew you couldn't be from around there.
Like a lot of people can't tell the difference between Welsh and English. Which to us is extremely different......
Yeah, its the television.
The Canadian accent is subtle and a trained ear can find you out in a heat beat. Say the word ';house'; and you are busted!
Yes, Canadians have an accent. Out west its a lot harder to hear, since in BC it's quite subtle, but if you compare someone from Vancouver with somebody from Newfoundland you can here quite a difference. Some people in Canada do have a strong accent, others just have a few things they say which are definately Canadian. Such as Hoser. I remember there was a comedy show from Canada, SCTV which had a sketch called ';Great White North'; hosted by 2 guys. Both had a heavy accent, maybe rural.
