Is it true there are shops in the US called Piggly Wiggly?

If so, how did they get that crazy name?Is it true there are shops in the US called Piggly Wiggly?
Sure is =) It was founded by Clarence Saunders in 1916 and was the first grocery store that customers did their own shopping in.

Quote from their website about the name....

';Mr.Saunders' reason for choosing the intriguing name Piggly Wiggly 庐 remains a mystery; he was curiously reluctant to explain its origin. One story is that he saw from a train window several little pigs struggling to get under a fence, and the rhyming name occurred to him then. Someone once asked him why he had chosen such an unusual name for his organization, and Saunders' reply was, ';So people will ask that very question.'; He wanted and found a name that would be talked about and remembered. ';Is it true there are shops in the US called Piggly Wiggly?
Thanks =)

Yup, although they don't compete so well with the larger chains in certain regions.
Yep... none in my area though. (Kentucky) But there was a ton before I moved from NC.
I am in the Midwest and I do remember one here years upon years ago, long gone now. I suppose there are still a few left, perhaps down south.
Yes - There was a chain of them in Texas for sure, although I think there's only one left in the state. Don't know about other states. (They were a grocery store)
