Some says that the intention of President Truman was to gain the Jewish-American vote in the election of 1948 !Is it true that Pr. Truman was accused of equal ignorance and of sponsoring the creation of a Jewish state ?
Truman used to say of the Jewish lobby,';They ask for guns, I give them guns (surplus WW II rifles, etc). They ask for recognition, I give them recognition (immediate recognition on the floor of the UN).

Truman was in Potsdam, Germany, weeks after the war ended (he was there when he decided to use the A-bomb) so he knew what the Jews of Europe had been through (the few survivors) so he recognized Israel to give a home to them. Traditionally, Jews vote Democratic (as a rule), so he wasn't too worried about currying favor..Is it true that Pr. Probably not. Harry Truman was an unusually well-read man, and of all the presidents was most likely to know the history of the region in detail. He simply recognized Israel officially the minute it declared it's existence because he thought it was the right thing to do, given the recent history of western Europe at the time.





Don't listen so much to hateful cynicism. It's become fashionable to doubt everything to the point of contrariness, and that has led to some spectacular eruptions of ignorance and stupidity. There's also been an incredible laxity in scholarship on the part of the general public as well, which doesn't speak well for our futures.
